Undocumented ferrets and their clandestine owners may come out of hiding soon if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says it's OK.
The "ferret freedom act" of 2004, also known as Senate Bill 89, will become law if the governor signs it.
Numerous attempts at providing pet ferrets amnesty in California have been burrowing the halls of the state Capitol since the mid-1980s. Yet, this is the first time one has passed the Legislature and sits on the governor's desk.
"I thought it was time to free the ferrets," Assemblywoman Barbara Matthews, D-Tracy, said of her "yes" vote.
