Schwarzenegger vetoes bill to ban 'Redskins' as name for teams

(09-21) 17:36 PDT SACRAMENTO (AP) --

The Redskins of Chowchilla Union High School will be able to keep their name, as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Tuesday vetoed a bill that would have prohibited Chowchilla and four other high schools from using the name considered by some American Indians to be racial slur.

In a message accompanying his veto, Schwarzenegger said local school districts should make their own choices and that the bill "takes more focus away from getting kids to learn at the highest levels."

Donna White, superintendent of Chowchilla Union High School District in Madera County, said school officials were "extremely excited. It will allow the community and the school to keep something they hold in the highest esteem."

"We've got 80 years of support and tradition and it paid off," said Bill Ingram, band director at Tulare Union High School in Tulare County. "We have definitely sent the e-mails and faxes over the last few months."

2. A word is just a air released a certain way.

The word 'fuck' is no more evil than the word 'god'. A word can mean whatever you want it to, and so it is all in the context the word is used, not in the word itself. I have to agree with Arnold on this one.

over here they have a reputation of going to Spain on vacation and getting very badly sunburned. I still haven't made up my mind on this issue though. I think we've done enough bad things to native americans over the years, but I agree that a word is often just a word.

6. When this happened at Stanford
I'm not a Stanford alumn, but my brother is.

He told me that when Stanford decided that the Stanford Braves was no longer acceptable, they held an election, for the student body to come up with a new mascot. They chose (bless their socially aware hearts) the Stanford Robber Barons. (Stanford is named for Leland Stanford Jr., a Guilded Age robber baron.)

The administration was horrified. They knew the alumni would be furious. So they overruled the students. Now the color cardinal is the official mascot of Stanford University.

My brother thinks that Robber Barons would've been much better.
