San Fransisco DUers
My daughter is graduating with her Bachelors in Social Work in May. She is bent and determined to move to San Fransisco (now in Florida). She has friends in the area and is arranging a roommate situation but no job.

She swears she will do anything.

She has experience in her field working her way through college at a youth shelter and then a battered woman's shelter so I hope she has some advantage in the job market.

My question: How bad is it? Does she have a chance of finding employment in her field? Or any decent job at all?

Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks,

DH

1. The new unemployment report is out: 10.1%
The state isn't hiring. It's broke.

2. She'll probably have her best luck with the non-profit sector
I live and work in SF. I started looking for jobs after the campaign and I got hired in about two months. That being said, I have experience and a decent looking resume. I would point her towards craigs list or idealist.org. The most listings are on CL.

to extend the search to the Bay Area in General. Have her check Craigslist for San Francisco to get a feel for what's out there. Don't rule out using an agency.

San Francisco is a fantastic city and worth looking into. I came here when I was 20 and never looked back.

4. Bay Area unemployment is much lower than the rest of the state
it's a bad situation here, but not as bad as in the Central Valley and Inland Empire.

5. Thanks for the comments and advice
I've shared them all with her.

We will be leaving Florida on May 2 and driving to San Fransisco.

Then I'll fly back.

Should be a great trip!

6. You should hit good weather, then.
Don't tell anyone, but we actually celebrate Summer in May and October here in SF. :)

8. bachelor's degree?
she probably won't find too much in her field since most agencies want people with master's or at least someone with a bachelor's with experience

tell her to apply to the country social service agencies

I believe that Alameda County Social Services is hiring

9. Job hunting is tough in SF
The unemployment rate in SF is 8%, but in reality it's double that. I applied for craigslist jobs. One interviewer told me that the same position received 50 applicants in summer 2008, and now they're getting 250 applicants. Non-profits are not hiring because funding has dried up. I have 3 years volunteer experience, and I haven't had as much as an interview with any non-profits. In fact, the organization I volunteer for may close up shop sometime this year. It's a very depressing situation out here, but I keep telling myself that I'm fortunate to have a roof over my head and food to eat.

Good luck to your daughter.
