e vote machine purchases must be approved by LA Board of Supervisors
I just found some 2002 memo that says they had to approve the purchase of Diebold machines. I'm going to write them and demand that they say whether they support paper trails, non-partisan equipment suppliers, and open source software. If not, they should be removed. I'll add the letter shortly, in the meantime, consider contacting these guys who are Conny McCormack's bosses:

4. What did they say? This is a non-committal reply from Zev 3/2/05

Comments:
Stop Conny McCormack from overturning Kevin Shelley's election reforms.

I read that you guys appoint her. If you have a way to rein her in or
impeach her, please do so. In the last three federal elections,
electronic voting machines without paper trails have proven to be highly
erratic, and worse most of the companies are controlled by partisans of
the republican party. I don't want my right to vote to be taken away
because of some corrupt, petty ass third rate bureaucrat. If you guys
don't rein her in, the public will have to refer this to the attorney
general or file a class action lawsuit against the county for violating
our civil rights.

Thank your for your e-mail regarding our County Registrar. I am aware
of the differences between Kevin Shelley and Conny McCormack and many of
the other Registrars around the state. I am following these matters
closely in an effort to protect the integrity of our election system at
a cost we can afford.

If I can ever be of any assistance, don't hesitate to contact me.

Zev Yaroslavsky
Los Angeles County Supervisor

5. Protect the Integrity ... at a Cost we can afford
So I guess if we can save money with Diebold
it's worth giving up the Election Protection of AVVPAT
Well, I guess everybody has their price

2. Good Digging
Interesting stuff
Now we have to find out who is Gartner Consulting
we do not know if this project was ever paid for and done
In a way, in a way, it should not be relevent with SB1348 as no Diebold systems are certified
BUT if it done and Conny Dearest uses it to demand Diebolds over CERTIFIED equipment, if we had a copy of the study, we could prepare a rebuttal
Might be worth checking out
Good Job

3. a very tough search: "Conny McCormack Diebold"
I was going to send these guys the Votergate video, and ask them if they will endorse the standards set by the Velvetrevolution:

paper ballots,
open software and
non-partisan election officials at
www.velvetrevolution.us

I would be happier if we went further and called for the criminal prosecution of Diebold, but that's too much to hope for.

I hadn't thought of the other implications of this beyond being able to hold the supervisors accountable.
