"Too Far to the Right" Moderates Reject Lamborn Line Up for Fawcett
CS Independent checks in with a report that moderates in district 5 are rejecting the right wing extremism of Lamborn!

'Too far to the right'
Moderates reject Lamborn, line up for Fawcett
by Cara DeGette

"I am a Republican, and I will be supporting Jay Fawcett."
Those words — spoken by respected longtime community business leader Marv Strait — might sound like heresy to the ears of many local Grand Old Party loyalists. For many Republican officeholders, or those who may one day want to become politicians, such a public statement could very well spell for them the kiss of death. But to Strait, a Republican for 51 years, supporting a Democrat running for Congress is really no big deal.

"I've always voted for the individual, and in this case, I support Jay," Strait says.

Strait is not the only high-profile local Republican who has publicly come out for Fawcett, an Air Force Academy graduate and retired lieutenant colonel who served in Desert Storm. Last week, the day after Doug Lamborn won a hotly contested six-way Republican primary, Colorado Springs City Councilman Scott Hente threw his support behind Fawcett. James Stewart, the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce, has also endorsed Fawcett, and this week Jerry Heimlicher indicated he will likely support the Democrat.

2. the Fundies just handed us our best chance
to pick up this seat. They nominated the most whacko of the candidates they had running.

5. Agreed
My first choice for the republican was Anderson...He was the only one who was sane. But Lamborn was my second choice. He was the most ridiculous and gave Fawcett a real shot.

I still don't see it happening, but some more good may come out of this. If Lamborn is truly as nuts as he appears (and I believe he is), then, if he wins, he will bring shame and ridicule on Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs republicans who have not been co-opted by Dobson may need to be shamed into realizing what their party has become. Many of us remember that shrew Betty Beedy (Beety?) While more than a few zealots came out in support of her, many right-wing residents of Colorado Springs were appalled. Lamborn has the capacity to make them collectively wretch as well.

All that said, go Jay. If a Dem comes out of this district the Republican machine will have nightmares for years.

3. Muahhahaha
Evil grins....Actually this is exactly what I was hoping for during the primaries! The most extreme righty up against our moderate fighting dem. It makes him look even more moderate and also makes him a dem that even moderate republicans can vote for as the sane alternative. This is going to be interesting! How ironic would it be that the groups that have given the Springs it's bad rap will ultimately be the thing that turns this "Safe red seat" into a blue seat for the first time ever?!
