I finally saw a Davis commercial this morning!
Much better advert production-wise than the Smith ones. Basically, it's an endorsement by Bob Graham. See it at www.jimdavis2006.com

I will say I'm not the biggest Davis fan, but it is high time he gets his face on the TV before Crist takes over. My only thought: the points he talks about on the commercial are class size, senior care, oil drilling. Does anyone think those are really hot issues that make people stand up, take notice, and vote? One thing the repugs have always done well is emphasize hot button issues that, while seemingly stupid, get folks fired up. (Gallagher's MA judges ad is a perfect example.) Maybe it's just me, but I'm not freaking out about nursing homes. (And I did a quick poll of the folks in the Silver Sneakers class at the Y this morning, and they didn't know it was an issue, either!)

1. A friend of mine drove back from FL's east coast
To the Tampa area over the week-end, and said there are Crist signs everywhere in the state, but nothing from Smith or Davis.

And I do hope Smith hires a new media consultant. His commercials do suck.

2. Smith's commercials suck, but at least he has the sense to...
hit a hot-button issue for Florida Democratic primary voters -- secure electronic voting. I think the OP's right that Davis need sto find something to hang his hat on.

3. Smith is running for the nomination. Davis is running for Governor.
Smith is narrowing Davis' primary lead as he becomes better know and pushes those hot button issues, but until recently, Davis had such a big lead, that he has been working a general election strategy rather than a primary strategy.

Is this the right thing to do? Like all election strategies, it will be really smart if it works and dumb if it doesn't.

4. Davis doesn't have signs yet
I live in Tampa - I see lots of Crist signs, a few Rod signs, but Davis doesn't have signs yet, at least not from what I've seen - and he may not get any. Signs are unnecessarily expensive and aren't nearly as effective as TV ads.
