Fair Elections - Update?
What happened to the initiative that was supposed to be on the ballot Nov. 7 to have a non-partisan commission apportion districts? We got the signatures to qualify, but looking at the Fl Elections website I see it was removed by the Florida Supreme Court.

Anyone know why?

1. Unfortunately, the good guys lost on this one
The republicans challenged it on the basis that it had two parts and the constitution/law (I don't remember which) that allows for amendments says they can only refer to a single issue. The argument was something like the proposed amendment called for the creation of a commission and also said what the commission would do (I don't remember exactly). Anyway, the court agreed and threw it out.

3. Sarasota County Commissioners Voted NOT To Have
the referendum on November ballot because of some "wording" on the signed petitions. I just went to a meeting last Saturday and we got the news there from on of the county Commissioners here! Jon Thaxton said he couldn't vote for it even though he really felt we need a paper trail, but he wasn't going to do something "illegal!"

It was all pretty fuzzy talk, but apparently they are going to "litigate" the thing now. Oh, hell what's a little more litigation going to mean.... just MORE expense!! Said he was impressed at how fast WE got the signatures to bring it before the Commission, but the vote is NO!!

Ass-holes!!
