TALLAHASSEE -- State Sen. Al Lawson has made his pick, and the Democrat from Tallahassee is sticking with his own team in the race to replace Jeb Bush as Florida's next governor.
The campaign for Congressman Jim Davis, the Tampa Democratic nominee for governor, this morning said Lawson is backing Davis in the race.
The release had a quote from Lawson:
“Jim Davis has, far-and-away, the strongest record of fighting for civil rights and racial justice of the two candidates for governor,” said State Senator Lawson. “We can count on Davis and Jones to make protecting the rights and interests of every family in Florida a top priority. They'll change the politics-as-usual in Tallahassee and work with the Legislature to stand up for Florida's families on issues like health care, property taxes and job creation.”
A week ago, Lawson had said he was considering who to back, saying he needed to keep the interests of the people in his district in mind. Then, he noted that sticking with the Democratic Party and losing candidates hadn't done him, or his constituents, much good. Lawson on Sept. 16 was seen at the Florida-State-Clemson football game, hobnobbing in the luxury boxes at Doak Campbell Stadium with Republican nominee Charlie Crist.
