Tallahassee · A political group with ties to U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch unleashed new documents on Monday that they say proves their claims that Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Betty Castor missed opportunities to fire a suspected terrorist fund-raiser when she was president of the University of South Florida in Tampa.
The American Democracy Project, a group led by Hollywood attorney Bernie Friedman, a longtime Deutsch friend, alleges that Castor "lied" to reporters who have quoted her as saying that she wasn't given information from the FBI about the former professor accused of organizing terrorist activities.
Castor faces Deutsch and Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, along with Broward resident Bernard Klein, in the Aug. 31 Democratic primary in the U.S. Senate race.
Friedman produced documents Monday suggesting that Castor reviewed FBI evidence in 1996 that Friedman said "should have been used to shut down the Islamic Jihad Terrorist Organization on her campus, or at the very least to launch a new independent investigation." Among the materials Friedman cited is an FBI search warrant affidavit made public in 1996 that outlined some of the allegations in the case.
