Cornball
Some of you may remember the last time I posted about one of the statues that was given as a gift to Ogle County. Some members of our county board stirred up the pastors and citizens in our area, worried that a statue of Demeter, to be placed in front of the new courthouse, was sending the wrong message. They did not want an idol on the courthouse lawn.

Well, this time, we have no such worries. Our the latest statue in the series is a giant cornball. It will be placed somewhere on Route 64.

"Cornball," the third statue from the Community Art Legacy Program of Ogle County, was unveiled Saturday at Bocker Grain, which hosted the "Corn Ball" event to show off the piece with dancers, a scoop shovel drill team and many other events.
Howard Russo, a professor of visual art from Elgin Community College, designed the sculpture, while the statue was cast by Jeff Adams of inBronze Foundry in Mount Morris, who cast the first two sculptures in the Community Art Legacy program.

The program started in 2005 with "From the Waters Come my Bounty," a human form incorporated with that of a fish, by Ray Kobald of St. Charles. It was placed above the dam at Kiwanis Park in Oregon. In 2006, "Agriculture, Mother of Civilization," by David Seagraves of Elizabeth, was placed at the Ogle County Judicial Center.

I am glad that our latest statue was not met with suspicion or accusations of religious heresy. This time, everyone "gets it."

2. I am disappointed that I could not get an article
with a picture. My local paper has a nice picture, but that paper has no online presence.

Actually, the Cornball is a sphere. It is a very nice looking sculpture, and appropriate to our agricultural region.

I'm still waiting for someone around here to find a reason to object to the statue or the theme, just like they did last time.

3. I love Ray's work - he's one of my favorites
from around here. And he couldn't be a nicer more genuine human being. Not overly impressed with Russo's past work. Would be interested to see a pic tho. How do they choose their artists?

4. And another note -
went to the Ogle County Energy Fair and stopped at the Dem booth. Asked for you but you weren't there. :(

5. Darn!
I have been at that table every year, except this year.

For a change, they had enough people to work to work the energy fair. I have been concentrating on working hard for our annual picnic.
