This just makes me sick. George Ryan, who has never accepted responsibility or expressed remorse for crimes that resulted in, among other things, the deaths of six children, could have his sentence commuted through the efforts of noted Senate soft touch Dick Durbin.
I think Senator Durbin is a decent man and a fine Senator. I know family tragedy has recently touched his life, and that such events change the way one thinks.
I also know George Ryan owes a debt to Illinois citizens that he has not repaid, and that neither his age nor his family's needs would waive that debt were he a lesser-known felon.
I was disgusted by Durbin's recent support for Joe Leiberman, and I am sickened by his misplaced concern for the unrepentant George Ryan. Whether or not you are in favor of his proposed request, you can send the senator your comments at
http://durbin.senate.gov/contact.cfm"A pardon or commutation for George Ryan would send a message to Illinois taxpayers and public servants that the consequences for public corruption in Illinois are less severe and would further fuel cynicism of our important institutions," (prosecutors) Patrick Collins, Joel Levin and Zachary Fardon said in a statement. They said a pardon or commutation "would be a true disservice to all citizens of this state and to the judicial process."
