June 13, 2004 — Hearings begin this week on how the state government will function if the battle over a $2-billion dollar budget deficit is not solved. Governor Rod Blagojevich is asking for support.
Sunday worship was in Spanish and English at the Church of God on North Spaulding. In a special visit, governor Rod Blagojevich even spoke a little Spanish about his values.
But in large part his message was in English and was about the state budget he's trying to get through the legislature. "I'm not going to sell the people of Illinois sort, to pass any old kind of budget that essentially would cut education, healthcare, and kick a 150-thousand men women and children off of the healthcare they get," Blagojevich said.
Amid music from mariachis, administrators at the Eli Whitney school in Little Village also gave the governor a platform. Sunday's visits to some of Chicago's Latino communities are part of a statewide tour to win support for his budget.
