To all Pro-Choice Activists in Louisiana
Mississippi needs your help to defend the state's ONLY remaining abortion clinic, in Jackson. Operation Save America already held a major protest there, hoping to eradicate abortion from the entire state. Fortunately, NOW, the ACLU, and Anti-Racist Action gave as good as the OSA did, but it did get rather tense - including a bomb threat (no bomb found, but no suspect has been named yet that I am aware of). You can read more about this, plus the messages "from the front" What a Mississippi Pro-Choice Rally Looks Like, by the Jackson Free Press, the city's alternative newspaper (AAN memember)

Unfortunately, another anti-abortion group is coming to Jackson on August 4 to try the same thing - it's name is Oh Saratoga. Once again, Jackson is at the bullseye in the abortion rights struggle. If you can spare a weekend and a few hours drive to save Misssissippi's only remaining abortion clinic, they really need your help.

2. Understood, Swamp Rat
...especially for the New Orleans area. Not to argue with you, but Shreveport is part of Louisiana too. May whom/whatever you DUers consider The Highest Power to be help you all in a swift and high quality rebuilding and recovery.

3. Thanks
Since you mentioned Shreveport... that area is more like Arkansas than the southern part of Louisiana. And since you are into cultural geography, an interst of mine as well, you might be interested to know that many in New Orleans refer to the South as a place that begins about 60 miles North of us - we are a Caribbean island surrounded by a sea of red. Personally, I relate better to Latin Americans and New Yorkers than people who live just an hour North by car.

As for that place called Shreveport, you won't find too many pro-choice activists in northern Louisiana, let alone people who think slavery was a bad thing. You would be surprised at the level of racism and bigotry found up there... probably one of the worst places in the nation.
