SONIC!!!! YES!!!!
Sonic's still tripping up traffic on Route 1
By Stacie N. Galang
Staff Writer

PEABODY — Sonic has a spilling problem — of traffic, that is.

Ten days after the Route 1 drive-in opened, Sonic appears to be the victim of its own success. The restaurant has more customers than it can accommodate, forcing more cars onto busy Route 1 and slowing traffic in the process.

But city officials say the backup won't last much longer.

Ward 5 Councilor David Gamache, who represents the area near the drive-in, said he has received "quite a few calls" about the traffic caused by the new fast food restaurant. He was hearing especially from residents on Huntington Woods Drive because drivers are using side roads off Lake Street to turn around.

"It will calm down," said Gamache, who has spoken to owners Gregg and Gina Monasteiro.

1. Sonic reminds me of Richie's Drive-In Burger near Fresh Pond Circle
in the '60s. We would hang out at the drive in all night only leaving a few times to go have drag races on Route 2 next to Spy Pond. It was the day of the Chevy 409 in a 4 door Bel-Air, or a Ford 427 Interceptor engine stuffed in a new Mustang.

Good to see the Sonic dive-thru take root, but in the day of Toyota Corrola's and the Prius, I doubt there will be any Route 1 drag races.

3. I never knew that there was a Sonic anywhere in Mass THANKS!
I used to go there when I lived in California.

I'm not driving 30 miles just to go, but if I am over there.....

4. ...But is it good?
I guess their year-long marketing campaign worked to hype the place up, but is the food really that great? I'm from the area but down in VA til December and haven't been to the Sonic.

On a side note, I guess going to Sonic on the North Shore is the recession version of going out on the town!
