Transportation Secretary Jim Aloisi resigning

Embattled Transportation Secretary Jim Aloisi is abandoning his post after nine rocky months, saying he won’t head the state’s new super transportation agency set to begin Nov. 1.

“In the coming weeks and months, he looks forward to continuing his work with the dedicated employees of our state’s transportation agencies and authorities to implement the landmark transportation reforms signed into law earlier this year by Governor Patrick,” said Aloisi spokesman Colin Durrant.

“He’s going to be letting his staff know he’s not a candidate for the head of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation,” the source said.

Aloisi, who has repeatedly made headlines through his combustive relationship with the Legislature and media, did not immediately return calls for comment. The departure is yet another shake-up in the Patrick administration’s transportation department - which has gone through several new leaders in the past year.

Aloisi, slammed for being a Beacon Hill insider, took over for Bernard Cohen earlier this year. Since then, former Massachusetts Turnpike Executive Director Alan LeBovidge jumped ship and MBTA Executive Director Dan Grabauskas left with a $320,000 payout.
