Voters OK taxes for school, senior center
February 13, 2011

Voters in this town, where a tax increase hasn’t passed since 1997, approved two temporary increases yesterday that will add about $400 to the average real estate tax bill annually for the next 20 years. A $77 million school building project for grades 7 to 12 was strongly supported in the ballot vote, with 2,547 in favor and 416 opposed. The state will reimburse about 65 percent of the cost, leaving the town with $34 million to cover. Voters also approved, 1,973 to 977, a $3.75 million senior center, to be built on a town-owned property called Sachem Rock. Supporters have been working to get funding for a senior center for about eight years. Town Meeting voters earlier last week also endorsed both projects. About 34 percent of the town’s registered voters turned out for yesterday’s vote.
