Winning MA essays from Faneuil Hall forum yesterday.
There was a great forum at Faneuil Hall yesterday. (That I forgot to alert on here because I didn't find out about it until late last week. Sorry.) Anyway, Kerry was there and gave a nice speech. But the kids' speeches were awesome. I wish the Senator didn't have to leave and could have stuck around to hear what these kids had to say. The theme of the essay contest was, "What did we learn from the last election."

The essays were great! And they answer the burning question, "Where do liberals come from?" We grow them from scratch in Boston, then tell them that the Presidential Candidate from the last election is going to be there when you give these essays, so have at 'em.

Excerpts:

Winner Grade 4-5
"Have you ever wondered about the 2004 election? Well I have. Would you feel scared if we had a careless president? I would because the president might be asleep when terrorists are attacking the U.S.A!"

Winner Grade 4-5
"Instead of the government giving lots of money to endangered species, the government is giving lots of money to the war in Iraq. War is a terrible thing, and I think this is unfair to animals out there suffering."

Winner Grade 6-8
"Debates do concentrate on the candidates' positions but can cause partisan rancor. Often times this comes from a provocative question that results in an over-the-top answer. The answer, without the question, is then played again and again on news broadcasts, defaming the candidate for nothing a normal person wouldn't do."

Winner Grade 6-8
"The candidates criticize each other, and say that they could do things better They never seem to talk about exactly what they would do, only what the other candidate is doing that is wrong. No one really needs to hear this, because they can figure out what is bad for themselves."

And my favorite essay is from a liberal who hasn't yet taken an economics class:

Winner Grade 4-5
"Making learning more exciting is easy for everyone. I'd put in brand spanking new high tech plasma screen computers and lots of them too. I'd also get the newest smallest projectors. Also I'd buy a faster Internet service like only three seconds."

Wonderful forum. I had a great time. (And the weather was great for hanging around Quincy Market. The street performers were all out.)

1. These are wonderful
And to have been able to read them in Faneuil Hall will be in the kids' memories as long as they live.

2. Maybe I'm being a partisan homer but
I swear, those just sound like Massachusetts people wrote them. Especially the lines like, "Don't tell us what is wrong about your opponent. We can figure that out for ourselves." Can't you just hear the implied, 'ya friggin moron' in there. LOL!

3. Amazing
How these young children can make such important cutting statements and understand these things at that level.

I think I underestimate children.
