Gov. Shitt Romney Vetoes Stem Cell Bill
BOSTON May 27, 2005 — Gov. Mitt Romney vetoed a bill Friday that would expand embryonic stem cell research in Massachusetts, but the measure has had more than enough support in the Legislature to override the governor's veto.

Fulfilling his long-stated promise, Romney said at a news conference that he was unable to sign the bill because it includes a provision allowing therapeutic cloning, in which scientists create a cloned embryo to harvest stem cells in hopes of using them to treat and cure disease. Critics have said the practice amounts to creating human life only to destroy it.

1. Is he positioning himself for a presidential run in the near future?

5. That Hypocrite Would Get Drilled
Straight up slammed.

He'd be pro-choice in Mass, RI, CT, CA...

He'd be anti-choice in UT, AL, MS, ID...

You get my point.

8. That's a rhetorical question right?
He's pandering so hard to the Christian Right that it seems he could completely forego running for re election in 2006 and just run for President. And he really is a fool if he thinks he will get the nomination.

2. I see he's putting the state first, as usual. (/sarcasm)

We have so many biotech companies in Mass., stem cell research would be a boon to business & industry in this state.

<more sarcasm coming> Gee, and I thought Mitt was a business&industry kind of guy.

3. Have you heard the radio ads with him in it, talking about this?
He was talking about how people who are in favor of stem cells wanted to clone people. What a bunch of horse crap. I laughed out loud at the thrift store I was shopping at.

4. "Reproductive cloning" (as to clone people is called) . . .

.
"Reproductive cloning" (as to clone people is called) . . . is ILLEGAL in this bill passed by both Massachusetts legislative houses.

Again, it is I L L E G A L to attempt reproductive cloning in Massachusetts under this new bill!!

In order to "reproductive clone," the fertilized egg must be implanted into a female uterus to grow. Under this bill it is illegal to implant the cloned fertilized egg into the uterus of a female recipient, period.

Therapeutic cloning, on the other hand, is the human female egg removed from a female, then the guts of the inside of the egg is removed, then a donor's DNA tissue is placed into the egg which causes the egg to be fertilized. The egg tissue gets no larger than a dot (.) on this page and is then used upon the donor to help cure disease. No way is there EVER any chance of reproducing a cloned human being. Therapeutic cloned stem cells more than likely will not be rejected by the donor/recipient because these stem cells contain his/her (donor/recipient's) own DNA. This is why therapeutic stem cell medical research is so vital.

What an *ss is Mittens Romney. A complete and total *ss!

Therapeutic Cloning also called Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer

9. How on earth did this weanie get to be governor anyway?
I've always been under the impression that Massachusetts was something like 99% registered Democrats, so how did a goose-stepping thug like Romney make it into public office?

10. Weak competition
It didn't help that he was running against Shannon O'Brien, who was just an awful choice in my opinion. I think I voted for the Green Party candidate that year.

12. Yeah, I noticed the left was split
... with better than average showings for independent candidates. It looks like it wouldn't have turned things even if the left had been united - Romney got a clean 50%, but it would have been closer. It also sounds like O'Brien was enough of a loser to turn away some left-leaning independents. A pity, Massachusetts will have to come up with a better candidate next time. Don't you guys realize you're the hope for all of us stuck in the rest of this god-forsaken reich? You guys have a reputation to uphold as the progressive promised land of milk and honey! :)

11. 99% Registered Democrats???
Sorry to be the one to let the air out of your balloon, but we are not even at the 50% level in MA. (It's more like the 30-40% range.) Most of the voters are "independent" or un-enrolled. Alas, we have much work to do, even in this very blue state.
