"...one of the very few real heroes of this story, the gloriously disreputable, fearless and funny Howie Carr. Howie is the only writer in Boston with the tenacity to learn the whole Bulger story, and the balls to tell it--not only to relate it in infinite detail .. but to laugh in the Bulgers' faces with jokes about The Caucasian, The Corrupt Midget and the Crime Family. " (Christopher Lydon Interviews...)

Whitey and Billy Bulger. Two brothers from South Boston. One becomes the president of the Massachusetts Senate. The other becomes a serial killing boss of the Irish Mafia, eventually topping the FBI's Most Wanted list.
Known for his scathing exposes of local politicians, Howie Carr has raised lots of eyebrows and voices over the years. Here he pushes the envelope again as he tells the controversial story of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, the Bulger Brothers, and the relationship among politics, law enforcement, and crime in Boston from 1950 to the present.
Howie Carr has recently completed his The Brothers Bulger which is scheduled to be released next winter by Time Warner Books. His book has also been optioned for a possible HBO cable television network project. The Brothers Bulger combines some of Carr's columns with new material chronicling the rise and fall of fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger and his brother William M., former president of the state Senate and the University of Massachusetts. Both Bulgers have been longtime targets of Carr.
(Background) Howie Carr, a native of Portland, Maine, is an award-winning columnist for the Boston Herald and a popular radio talk show host on WRKO-AM. Carr is famous for pushing the envelope and not regretting that he went too far. His opinion is valued by the TV stations he's regularly featured on, such as NBC Today, MSNBC, C-SPAN, CNN, Larry King Live, Fox News and CBS This Morning. Besides being heard on Boston's WRKO, he is syndicated across New England. Carr has interviewed numerous politicians, authors and celebrities, and he's not afraid to ask those "no comment" questions.
