Martha Coakley for Senate rumors...
What do you think? She has a high profile, though I don't have any idea what her politics are like.

According to Paul Sullivan (Lowell Sun - always take with a grain of salt) she was a hit at the convention.

1. a definite "NO!" . . . why?
Edited on Tue Aug-03-04 12:38 AM by TaleWgnDg
because there are more competent ppl than Martha! Barney Frank comes to mind as does Ed Markey . . . both have paid their dues many times over and "deserve" a shot at this Senate seat.

Barney Frank is one hell of a guy. He's brilliant, ethical, a great congressional record, and has a terrific sense of humor which he uses to disarm his opponents and very successfully too. However, if it's going to be Barney then he will be sorely missed in the House.

No, definitely NOT Martha Coakley. Although I've known Martha since she was assistant D.A. u/ Tom Reilly, Middlesex County . . . she's had her sights on higher political game ever since she prosecuted the much (overly) publicized Louise Woodward re killing 8-month-old Matthew Eppen. Again, Martha hasn't held any state political positions but for the District Attorney's Office; so she should run for some other office, not U.S. Senate!!

3. I agree!
And both she and Reilly left a real bad taste in my mouth the way they went after Woodward as if she was a vicious serial killer!

2. I think a better idea would be for Martha
to take the Congressional seat of someone else once they win the Senate seat (like Barney, McGovern, etc.).

4. great idea, Killarney, but for one thing . . .
Martha's gotta reside in the congressional district for which she runs . . . e.g., so if it's Barney Frank for the U.S. Senate seat, Martha's gotta reside in "his" congressional district in order to run for "his" congressional seat, etc. . .

5. You do not have to live where you run.
Think of Ray Flynn running in the 8th district. Martha is the Middlesex county DA, Middlesex county goes into Tierney's, Meehan's, Markey's, Capulano's And Frank's, congressional district. I am not sure where Martha calls home but her base is the county which is much bigger than a congressional district. All that said, if she is the only woman in the race she has a shot as long as all of the boys from the eastern part of the state get in.

A lot depends on how long Senator Kerry's coat tails are. If we take back the House, Markey and Frank may not want to give up their Chairmanships.
