Please join me in nominating John Conyers as a Michiganian of the Year
As many of you may know, every year the Detroit News names of number of Michigan residents as its Michiganians of the Year. I plan to nominate John Conyers for being one of the only ones to stand up and speak out against the Ohio election results due to voter irregularities. By doing this, he has shown his leadership and willingness to stand up for what is right. Please join me in nominating him by following the easy instructions below.

Write a short letter explaining why he should be considered. Include your name and telephone number, and address letters to 2004 Michiganians, Features, The Detroit News, 615 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI 48226. You can also fax submissions to 313-222-2451 or e-mail them to features@detnews.com. The deadline is January 31.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

8. I did mine this morning. Text is noted below.
I would like to nominate Rep. John Conyers, Democratic Congressman from Detroit, as a Michiganian of the Year for 2004.

I am nominating Rep. Conyers for his strength and leadership in being the first person in Congress to come forward to prove to the country and the world that the election results in Ohio (and possibly in other states) need to be investigated. By doing so, he has shown bravery to stand up against the prevailing opinion that this was a clean election with a clear outcome. Although most of what he has been doing behind the scenes has been ignored by the mainstream media, those of us who have been following the story know what went on in Ohio -- from disenfranchisement of voters in many forms to actual tampering of voting machines to a laughable recount that did not follow Ohio's voting regulations -- and know that Rep. Conyers has been at the forefront of the investigation. He has held forums, gathered strong evidence and taken testimony from witnesses and is working hard to try to make sure that every vote counts and that everyone who wanted to vote had a chance to do so.

A man of conviction, Rep. Conyers is planning to challenge the Ohio electoral vote on January 6 when Congress meets to open the votes from around the country. He will have the support of other representatives in the House, however, we won't know for sure until that date whether he will have the required support from at least one senator. Time will tell whether or not this challenge will be successful, however, I believe Rep. Conyers deserves this recognition just for having the courage to speak up and try to make the country aware of what went on on November 2 in Ohio and elsewhere. It may be too late for this election, but even if this challenge is not successful, I have confidence that Rep. Conyers will work hard for badly needed election reform to make sure that future elections are fair and consistent in all states. The people of this country deserve no less than that.

Thank you for considering this nomination.

10. I'll go along with this!
I'll work on my letter and get it sent off. I hope you don't mind, but I copied yours to use as a base. I promise to use my own words. I just wanted to have something to work from. Nice letter, by the way!
