Crosses, row upon row - Display is memorial to dead, protest of Iraq war

Monday, September 13, 2004
BY SHAWN PERSONKE
News Special Writer

One thousand white crosses stood evenly spaced Sunday on the green grass at Ann Arbor's Veterans Park.
Some with names, some without, the crosses serve both as a memorial to the 1,000 American soldiers who have lost their lives in Iraq and as a silent protest of that war.
At a sundown ceremony, "Taps" was played while the names of the dead were read.

Known as Arlington Midwest, the growing number of crosses have been displayed in the Ann Arbor area four times - on the first anniversary of the war in Iraq, Memorial Day, Independence Day and again on Sunday. The display was built by Veterans for Peace and is co-sponsored by the Ann Arbor Area Committee for Peace.
