I'm 18 and I wanna know when Martin Sabo is retiring
so I can run for his seat.

I'm not really the businessman type, so is a good way to break into congressional politics is by serving on someone's staff. If Mark Dayton's hiring, where's a number I can sign up?

1. I doubt Sabo will retire soon
He is only 66 and that is below retirement age for most members of congress. Plus, he is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee and ranking Dem on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee so he is pretty powerful and could be quite powerful if Democrats retake the majority.

2. Do you think he'll retire by 2012
if not, what's the minimum age for running for governor.

I admit, I am the type of person that is comfortable with administrative power and actually do enjoy the limelight, but not to worry my heroes are Russ Feingold and Wellstone. I'd enjoy people saying I'm as principled as Wellstone and I admit I do have some work to do. :)

3. He may
I would guess that 2012 would be around the time he would retire. It is possible he would try to serve past the 2010 census redistricting to preserve his Minneapolis district. I know Republicans wanted to combine Minneapolis and St. Paul into one district after the 2000 census and they may try to do that again. Also, MN might lose a district after the 2010 census, I think. However, I know he used to smoke cigars until recently (maybe doctor's orders made him stop) so you never know if that could cause him problems and at his age anything is possible over the next 8 years.

MN state constitution requires you to be 25 to become Governor.

6. You'll have to get in line behind several others
...including Mike Erlandson, the current DFL party chair. He runs Sabo's Mpls office and has served as an aide to him for many years. He's also a very good guy and quite popular amongst not only the regulars, but many of the new breed of activists as well.

Best of luck to you-- but you may be better of trying for something a little less grand to start with. Run for one of those soil & water conservation district seats-- I bet you'd win, since most people don't even know what they are!

:D

5. I do not know how far your
campaign would go in Sabo's district, but I'd wager, not very far.
