Well, they're televising the canonization of James J. Exon on PBS
right now. Funny, the good people of Nebraska see him as a saint now but once upon a time, well he was being called a drunk of the worst sort.

Has politics stopped being as much fun as it was when you first ran for governor?

No, I still think politics was a lot of fun. If you don't have fun in politics, then you better get out very early on. Is it as much fun as it was in the days of yesteryear, I think the answer is no, because today I think unfortunately politics is much more mean spirited than it was then.

I don't think I've seen you since or previously as upset as you were when Senator Tower was brought in to campaign against you.

That's the only time in my whole political career that I was really upset because Senator Tower brought in by now Mayor of Omaha Hal Daub said that I was one of the worst boozers in the United States senate. Not only was that a direct up truth but it was said in a particularly vicious manner. Now unfortunately, I can never forgive Hal Daub for that. The people of Omaha have forgiven Hal Daub for that, I guess. They elected him their mayor. But that didn't hurt me directly, Bill, as bad as it did the family. There was never a time in all these years of politics when I saw Pat so downtrodden nor did she fight back any harder after that attack.

<snip>

Politics in Nebraska don't require brains, nor does it require integrity and ethics (i.e. Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel)

Oh, and it was widely known that Senator Exond did love his alcohol. But then again, I prefer a drunk to a lying bastard who makes up names like Shock and Awe for his plan to take over a defenseless country.

Oh wait, Nebraska's good Senators allowed that to happen. I would a thousand times prefer Mr. Exon in Washington than the two asswipes we've got now.

1. It is a Sad Day...
Exon was a giant. He was able to cross boundaries.I thank him for stopping the Two Forks Dam in Colorado and Scenic River designation for the Niobrara River.

I really don't care if he took a drink or took ten. He never wanted anyones son to fight somebody else's war.

2. Yeah, it sort of is. I'd damn sure rather have Exon than the two asswipes
we have now. But what really struck me as being funny about this
two-faced baloney is that I was sitting at work at the front desk of an architectural firm when John Tower stood right across the hall from me and held that famous press conference.

The builing was a great building on tenth and Harney in the Old Market area of Omaha. It was owned by a radio station and the would broadcast in the front window. The KQKQ-98 building. Anyway, here I was typing specifications minding my own business and all of a sudden all these people came downstairs (we were in the basement) and then John Tower started to give his news conference (or whatever) and laid into Exon. The guys I worked with and I were just watching this shit thinking 'wow, that's a low blow' and wondering about slander laws.

Isn't it funny, no matter how many sacks of shit they might call someone while they're alive just wait. When the person dies, the same ass clowns will be at the wake giving a character reference that would knock their socks off (that is if they can figure out a way to get something out of it for themselves).
