Fellow Durhamites: I am so sad for our town. I'd like your feedback:
I think there are so many of us in Durham who CHOOSE to live here because it is a diverse, interesting, small town/little city kind of place that accepts all kinds of people. I know there are others like me who are hurting about the recent misogynist incident in Trinity Park. Something bad happened that night and hopefully the guilty will be brought to justice. I am sending good thoughts/vibes out to our community that this horrible, negative, violent behavior won't ruin our fragile peace. Remember to be kind to your neighbor and keep the faith that we will all come through this. That the victim, especially, will come through this. How can we as a community, let her know, that so many of us are together? How can we best say we care?

1. Well first of all why don't we wait until the players are convicted
until we start passing judgements.

2. um......I don't remember passing any. I'm sad for the discord.
For the possibilities of wrong doing and wrong conviction. For what might happen in our community and how we can help her no matter what happened. I don't think people do these things out of the blue, but I'm not passing judgment. There are many fine lines where ALL these issues are concerned. We can't know, but I don't doubt at all that there was misogyny at the very least. (look it up if you don't understand it) It is YOUR passing quick judgment here I'd say. I'd rather you put me on ignore than bite my head off when I'm trying to ask for ideas of how we might do something positive in the light of something negative.

3. Here is an example of misogyny:
This woman, like Ann Coulter, is clearly a maniac. Opportunist. Hate Monger, right wing shit head, etc, etc. But read the posts. Good Democrats...going just-a-little over the edge with their hatred and anger. The attitudes gain a sort of twist you don't see when people are criticizing a male. Oh yeah you get the "FUCK YOU's" and the "I'd like to BBQ them over a spit" kind of things...but so many statements, that if I didn't know better, I'd say they came from Republicans. The hatred takes on a visceral tone that I only find in the criticism of a female.

Just think about it. If you don't get the relevance of this reference, ask someone you know who is good at explaining things.

I see a fine line being crossed here. Between anger and frustration with a public figure, and male posturing towards a female who is clearly intimidating.

Please don't misunderstand me AGAIN.

5. A lot of the discord is artificially produced, like when ..
.. Rush gets on national radio and calls the woman a "ho[]" or Savage calls her a "slut."

One of the real issues is how we can fight back against this sort of divisive hate-mongering and its terrible effects -- it is, after all, simply creating ugly controversy for the sake of generating ratings and ad revenue. The community needs to come together on this.
