Meeker Won't Run for Dole Senate Seat, Will Seek Fourth Term

Raleigh — Mayor Charles Meeker said he has decided against running for a statewide office and will instead seek a fourth term as leader of North Carolina's capital city.

Meeker, a Democrat, announced his intentions Tuesday, ending speculation that he might challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole in 2008.

"In a fast-growing city like Raleigh," Meeker said, "there's more for a mayor to do than a junior member of Congress."

Meeker, 56, told the News & Observer of Raleigh that he had briefly considered a run against Dole but decided against it over the holidays.

Even though she's taken some hits over the last year, a Dem with a solid name statewide is needed to get Liddy out of office. Easley would definitely for the bill.
