With release of new poll, Ney’s camp admits troubles
Wednesday, July 12, 2006

- - A poll announced yesterday by Rep. Bob Ney’s campaign is notable for its candor in acknowledging the problems the Heath Republican faces. Ney, who remains embroiled in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, is running for re-election against Democrat Zack Space.

The poll shows Ney up by just 4 percentage points over the little-known Dover city attorney. Still, Ney pollster Glen Bolger says that’s a big improvement from January, when the congressman trailed Space by double digits. That same month, Abramoff pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges.

...

Meanwhile, Space is promoting his own internal poll that shows the Democrat with a lead of 11 percentage points during roughly the same period in late June when Ney’s poll was taken. - -

1. DCCC recognizes Space's very successful fund raising quarter
Embattled GOP Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio lost the most recent fundraising battle to his Democratic challenger and continued to hemorrhage money from his campaign, yet he vowed Thursday to fight on.

The Republicans' national House campaign organization remained behind Ney, who is described in federal court documents as performing official acts to benefit lobbyists while accepting gifts from them. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged.

Ney still had a 2-to-1 advantage over Democrat Zack Space in campaign cash as of June 30. Ney said the $1.3 million he's raised since the 2004 election put him on track for record contributions. Although the campaign spent $50,000 more than it took in from April 13 to June 30, he said he had enough to win and no one had asked him to quit the race.

"There may be talk, but nobody has approached me," Ney told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I mean, who really cares what he (Space) raised this cycle? Any spin that Space is winning the money war is at odds with the facts."

Space collected about $308,000 for the quarter, compared with about $123,000 for Ney.

Zack was one of the 13 candidates added to the red to blue campaign.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on Thursday expanded its program to focus attention on Democratic House contenders who are seeking to take over Republican-held seats.

The committee newly identified 13 House candidates as waging competitive campaigns and deserving of additional political and financial support from the party leading up to the November elections.

These additions were the latest installment of the 2006 “Red to Blue” program established in February by the DCCC, which is trying to orchestrate the net gain of at least 15 seats needed to erase the Republicans’ current House majority. The program takes its name from the now-familiar color-coded partisan maps, as the DCCC is trying to turn Republican-held “red” districts to Democratic-controlled “blue” districts.

3. Out in my garden
working on the campaign, traveling, and planning for my first grandbaby. It's been a busy month. Tomorrow Ted Strickland is visiting New Philly (Daily Grind - 2 pm). I'll be there. I check in occasionally, but don't often post unless I want to keep something for my journal.
