Kerry must turn region’s downturn into votes
Monday, September 13, 2004
Mark Niquette
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND — Not long ago, this home of John D. Rockefeller and Drew Carey was calling itself the "comeback city," confident it was no longer the "mistake by the lake," where the government defaulted and the Cuyahoga River burned.

But new homes for the Indians, Browns and Cavaliers in the 1990s, plus the gleaming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, couldn’t help ease chronic unemployment and other problems that grew worse when the economy slumped and plants closed. <snip>

In this rustiest corner of Rust Belt Ohio, Democratic turnout could decide whether Kerry or Bush carry Ohio — and which man is elected.

"I would argue that northeast Ohio will be the most important region in the state and thus the most important in the country," said Jeff Rusnak, a Democratic consultant in Cleveland. <snip>

1. SE Ohio crucial as well
This is a link to a thread on GD: Campaign 2004. Close to the end there is an interesting discussion about southern and southeast Ohio -- Appalachia -- and how it has been virtually disenfranchised by benign neglect. I think we also must focus on this area. It may well be too late for this election cycle -- but these Ohioans and their poverty have been off our collective radar for far too long, and it has to change. Plenty of food for thought here.

2. Each Region
The Dispatch is doing a story each day for the next week about a different political region in Ohio, so all of them will be profiled.

3. I'm interested in seeing what they write about SE, SW Ohio....
...but the Dispatch is a pay site. Would you mind summarizing the articles about SE, SW Ohio when they come out?

Much thanks!
