Bush in Cincinnati... LMAO... an appearance at the TALBERT HOUSE???
I'm sorry... that's just too rich for words. For those of you who don't know, the Talbert House is where those guilty of DUI's, drug possession, drunk and disorderly charges and the like are sentenced to spend a few days, sobering up, and what-not.

Ironic...?

http://www.enquirer.com/midday/06/06222004_News_mday_bush22.html

President Bush arrived in Cincinnati this afternoon for an appearance at the Talbert House and a private fund-raiser in Indian Hill.

Bush was greeted at about 3:30 p.m. at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport by, among others, Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and Rep. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

The president's 24-vehicle motorcade traveled to the Mount Auburn location of the Talbert House, a non-profit agency that offers programs in mental health counseling, community corrections and substance abuse.

Bush planned to meet with a half-dozen Talbert House clients to discuss his $1.2 billion "Healthy Marriage Initiative."

2. Bush also loves doctors who injure their patients
To bolster his argument Mr. Bush introduced a local doctor, Compton
Girdharry, to an audience at Youngstown State University. Dr. Girdharry, an obstetrician/gynecologist, said he had been driven from a practice of 21 years by the high cost of malpractice insurance.

The president praised Dr. Girdharry and thanked him for his "compassion."

If Mr. Bush was looking for an example of a doctor who was victimized by frivolous lawsuits, Dr. Girdharry was not a great choice. Since the early 1990's, he has settled lawsuits and agreed to the payment of damages in a number of malpractice cases in which patients suffered horrible injuries.

3. The Talbert House visit is just a cynical way to get
the taxpayers to pay for the trip in for a fundraiser.

And no one gives a shit.

4. So he's going to use them as props, too, huh?
While he tries his best to ZERO OUT Federal funding for substance abuse treatment and dual-diagnosed people. Guess all those "Coke Canyons" in his brain aren't doing him much good in the personal experience category!

Hope that place won't close later on the way the plant in Canton did!:eyes:

"Little Bob" Taft and Dub...two rich frat boys who knew neither pain nor responsibility...good grief, makes me glad I voted for Clinton twice, right, JEN?:D

B-)

7. Seems to be his M.O.
Pose for a photo op with a charitable organization (like the Boys and Girls Clubs of America), then gut federal funding that supports them a week or so later.

6. Talbert House is for RICH drunks.
As I understand it, it's an option for those who can afford it; poor drunks get to go to jail or attend an under-funded program with less than stellar staff and results.

Maybe some of the folks who paid $25K to have dinner with Shrub are alumni.

Here's the goods:

Talbert House is a jail. Nothing more, nothing less. Bush may wish to make it a centerpiece of his "Healthy Marriage Initiative" or "Faith Based Initiative" acts, but I'm not buying it.

Look, I've been a Cincinnati bartender for years. I've known more than my fair share of Talbert House inmates, and it's not a pretty site. That's where you go when you get a DUI. Three days if it's your first offense and you don't want to pay the fine... Two weeks (shorter if you take community service) if you're on your second DUI.

One of the more hilarious passages in Bush's speech at Talbert House, as told by the Chimp-Slurp Cincinnati Enquirer:

http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/06/22/loc_loc1abush.html

He said Talbert House was "such a great example of compassionate love," which was "changing society one soul, one conscience at a time." And he called agency president Neil Tilow "a general in the army of compassion."

That's a funny thing to call a jail, isn't it? "A great example of compassionate love." Hey, Chimp! IT'S A FUCKING JAIL. Nothing more, nothing less. Jail. No choices. It's a JAIL.

I get so angry sometimes... and just after finishing his visit to the "compassionate, soul-giving" JAIL, he collected $2.5 million in donations, at a $25,000-per-person fundraiser in the wealthiest Cincinnati community, Indian Hill.

Compassionate Jails and $2.5 Million Fundraisers. Quite a whirlwind Cincinnati visit, wasn't it??

10. Golf outing as a fund raiser?
I still say Talbert House is for RICH drunks. Jen, someone you and I both know went to Talbert House INSTEAD of jail and he paid dearly for the experience.

Here's the link:

They claim to have a sliding-scale payment policy; the richer you are, the more you have to pay.

11. True, but I've known plenty of people...
... who were sentenced to time at the Talbert House, in lieu of jail. None of these people were rich... just co-workers! If they didn't want to pay, they could have served their time in the Hamilton County jail; none of my friends who served time at Talbert were alcoholics or drug addicts, either. They were just rather unlucky drivers, really.

From everything I've heard about Talbert, it's far from luxurious.

I think the truly rich DUI offenders just get the charges lowered to reckless op, thanks to an army of lawyers and influence with judges, and never have to serve any time at all. The rest of the people go to the Talbert House. :D

12. One of them was Pete Rose.
My first husband worked near Talbert, I remember him telling me about the whoop-de-do when Rose came and went from Talbert. I don't remember if he was actually 'in' the program, or if he was serving volunteer time at Talbert as community service -- but boy, do I remember the fuss at the time.

13. Today is my 23rd anniversary of sobriety.
Yep, I had my last drink 23 years ago today! I celebrated (?) by having a root canal this morning.

As you know, Jen, I've been to hell and back -- and "back" is so much better.

As far as having charges lowered to reckless op, yes that's true; I once paid a REPUBLICAN judge $300 (under the table, of course) for that privilege. He's since been disbarred.

When I went through the 30-day-lock-up-program here in Dayton it cost $5,000 and only those who had insurance coverage or money to pay were admitted. I do believe Talbert House is such a place. At A.A. meetings I subsequently heard about folks who had to go to much less desirable places for inferior treatment.

I think I'll have some iced tea and propose a toast to me!
