Rumsfeld's plan screws over Blue Oregon. Gee, I'm
so surprised.

By MATTHEW DALY
The Associated Press

Oregon would lose more than 1,000 military personnel under a base closure and realignment plan announced Friday.

According to a list sent to members of Congress by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld early Friday, the Umatilla Chemical Depot and Naval Reserve Center in Central Point would be closed, and the Air National Guard base in Portland would be significantly reduced in size.

The Umatilla Depot, in eastern Oregon near Hermiston, would lose 512 employees, while the Guard base at Portland International Airport would lose 564 employees.

2. DeFazio was on Hartmann's show just now talking about this.
He said it was pretty much a done deal.

They were like yeah, Portland will have to use
slingshots now for homeland defense.

Lol.

Love DeFazio, hope he runs against Gordon Smith in '08.

4. I would love DeFazio to fun against
gordo puke puke, but isn't DeFazio up for reelection in '08? And if DeFazio lost, wouldn't he have to give up his seat in the House? I would hate that.

5. True, as all House members run every two years.
The key would be to find a suitable Democrat to replace him in the 4th District. I think that could be done.

6. they could probably find a good candidate to take
DeFazio's place, but doesn't his district cover a lot of red? The Dems would have to find a moderate that will appeal to them too. Somehow DeFazio has convinced them he's moderate or he picks up so many in Eugene it doesn't matter what the rest of his district thinks.

Also, if he lost to gordo puke puke, he would be out. I don't know if I want to take that chance.

best

7. Yeah, it's somewhat of a gamble
If he lost he could run for governor in 2010, but that's way out there.

The 4th district is a real mixed bag.

Lane County, which has Eugene and Springfield and part of the coast, is reliably Democratic. Benton County is blue (OSU and Corvallis), and Coos County remains marginally Democratic.

Douglas County is very right-wing, Linn County leans right, and Josephine and Curry counties lean right, too, but that is changing as more Californians are moving there, retired and trending liberal.

It's an interesting question, that's for sure. :)
