Visiting Portland next week.........
So, I'm going to take a roadtrip and visit Portland.

I welcome any suggestions as to what I absolutely MUST see.........can't miss, etc.

I know I'm going to "Powell's City of Books". What else should I do??

Thanks
BW925

1. How long is your trip?
There's so much to do, historic, gardens, the Gorge, Astoria, and then there's Saturday Market, Alberta Street, or just wandering around downtown. Depends on what you like.

2. Lots of restaurants ....

and some amazing brewpubs: Portland is Beervana

Some good spots: Downtown, SE Hawthorne, Alphabet District, South Waterfront, Museum District ....

My friends usually enjoy chillin at Pioneer Courthouse Square, watching the craziness whilst munching on some street food .... They like Voodoo Doughnuts and Saturday Market; Waterfront Park and South Park Blocks .... Some like the many music clubs ...

In Portland - Buy all day bus passes and go anywhere on the MAX, the Streetcar, WES or by Bus ... Downtown is semifree ...

If driving, Multnomah Falls is about 1 hour, and Silver Falls State Park about 1.5 hours ... Both are regular stops ... There is also quite a number of great wineries all about the area .... The coast is stark, beautiful and rather cold - about 1.5 hours drive .... (the sea tends to swallow unsuspecting tourists pretty often, so beware the big, sneaker waves)

Another nice drive: Portland > Columbia River Gorge/Waterfalls > Hood River > Mount Hood/Timberline Lodge > Portland - About 150 miles - Awesomely beautiful .... possible snow ....

And don't forget: Seattle is only a 3 hour drive ....

3. Tibetan film festival at the Bagdad Theatre today...
The Bagdad Theatre on Hawthorne routinely gets a lot of progressive events like Thom Hartmann and Ed Schultz speaking appearances amongst other things, though not much else listed for this coming week.

Here's KPOJ's event calendar that might have some things of interest like the St. Patty's day Crawfish fest...

4. This is the perfect time to hit the Chinese Garden.

After Powell's, walk over to the Deschutes Brewery Portland Pub, a block away, north on 11th from Powell's.

Walking the waterfront loop is a good way to see the heart of the city.

Enjoy!
