Arlen's Appeal: Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, in a race for re-election against Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Hoeffel, is pitching his seniority as an asset in the war on terror, in a bid to garner campaign contributions from his co-religionists.
The senior Jewish Republican in Congress, the four-term lawmaker argued in a letter this month to Jewish Pennsylvanians that his position as the senior Republican member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations gives him clout to protect the Jewish community.
"Here in America, Jewish institutions such as synagogues, community centers and schools face a heightened risk of attacks from terrorists," Specter wrote in the undated letter.
"After 24 years in the Senate, I have gained the seniority, experience and respect of my colleagues that enables me to accomplish whatever is needed for the security of Israel and the American Jewish community," he continued.
