Luzerne County puts hold on absentee ballots

By James Conmy TIMES-SHAMROCK NEWSPAPERS 09/08/2004

WILKES-BARRE -- Luzerne County Bureau of Elections said it has been forced to deny absentee ballot applications that an official said were prompted by a mass mailing from President George W. Bush's campaign.

Leonard Piazza, director of the election bureau, said Tuesday a mailing sent out by the Bush/Cheney campaign encouraged the county's absentee ballot-eligible voters to submit their applications and vote in the Nov. 2 election.

An absentee ballot application was included in the mailing. Mr. Piazza said the campaign could have received a list of absentee ballot-eligible voters from his department or a third party. He was unsure how many people received the letters and applications.

Is this not illegal? I would bet quite alot this this same thing is going on throughout the nation and worse. Chruches used as campaign mailing lists for the Busheviks, the same kinds of manual disenfranchisement practied in 2000 and 2002, with some new one throw in for good measure.

2. PA. law and absentee ballots
My understanding it that PA. law still only allows absentee ballots if the person is physically not able to be at the polling place (such as being far away at college or in a nursing home).

There was widespread fraud a few years ago involving absentee ballots in a Philadelphia State Senate election. The court threw out the election results because of it.

Where electronic voting machines are being used without a paper trail, some people are encouraging everyone to use an absentee ballot. This ensures there will be a paper trail. However, some other people say that the absentee ballots are added into the same software for the final count - and that the counting software had a back door that can be manipulated.

3. You are also allowed to vote absentee in PA
if you are going to be outside of your municipality during voting hours on election day. They changed the law a few years ago, as you used to have to be outside of the county on election day.

4. I'm not sure what they are up to with this.
How can this help them? Does it delay the media's ability to call the race in the event of it being too close to call? Are they attempting to get people to vote twice? That wouldn't work unless they have people deliberately tampering with the official voting rolls on election day by not crossing off known voters who also voted absentee. This really perplexes me. I know they are up to something, though.

5. They may be up to the same thing that we are up to
Increasing the voter turnout of our base. If someone has already voted by absentee ballot, we don't have to worry about them not showing up on election due to weather or illness.
