MOUNTAIN CITY — Johnson County has a new mayor, retained the same sheriff, and paved the way toward having the first Johnson Countian in the Tennessee House of Representatives since Barton Hawkins represented the 4th District more than 20 years ago...

The county provided a huge boost to favorite son Campbell in his bid to succeed retiring state Rep. Jason Mumpower in the 3rd District. Campbell won the Republican nomination because of the big lead he received in Johnson, which overcame the larger number of voters in Sullivan County because it was split among several candidates.

Campbell received 3,285 votes in Johnson County (71.6 percent) to 595 votes for nearest competitor Timothy Hill (13 percent). Adding the Sullivan County vote, Campbell’s total vote was 3,711 to 2,535 votes for Hill. Sherry Greene Grubb finished third in the district with 2,048 and Marvin Gurley was fourth with 1,402. Grubb had 285 votes in Johnson County and Gurley had 289.

Campbell now faces Democrat Joe Mike Akard and independents Parke Morris and Thomas White in the November general election.
