"People are mad, not just our group, but worldwide," Randall Ellis, executive director of the organization, said Friday. "This is more than a gay issue. It's a child welfare issue. People we don't have on our mailing list are asking, 'What can we do?'"
...Brent Jones of Addison, who is gay, said he doesn't believe it will become law unless the amendment is dropped. Jones said he already has written Talton and plans to contact his own state representatives to protest the amendment.
"People are sane enough to know that gays make fit parents," Jones said. "My partner and I both have good jobs and can raise kids in a stable financially secure home. These kids get stuck in the boonies out in a trailer park. Why wouldn't you want them with people who have good values, are excellent role models and have stable financial situations?"
Allen resident Joel Kelso echoed that sentiment.
"I wish everybody would step back and look at this objectively and take their religious fanaticism out of it," he said. "I'm not gay. I live in a traditional family. I've got a wife and four kids. I'm opposed to this. The kids are going to suffer. There aren't that many families out there who want to take them."
