Truck Dumps 30,000 Eggs On Houston Highway
Truck Dumps 30,000 Eggs On Houston Highway

UPDATED: 7:23 PM EDT May 31, 2004

HOUSTON -- A sleeping driver was blamed for causing an accident that dumped thousands of eggs on a Houston thoroughfare early Monday, shutting it down for 15 hours.

The 18-wheeler plowed head-on into the West Loop interchange at the Southwest Freeway around 3 a.m. The impact destroyed the big rig's cab and split open the trailer, dumping its cargo of 30,000 pounds of eggs all over the freeway. The trailer nearly went over the guardrail, flattening metal bolts with its force, officials said.

The accident closed all northbound lanes of the roadway for several hours. Traffic was diverted to a feeder road, which was backed up for miles.

The cleanup was expected to take most of the day as the shattered eggs from the Happy Hen Farms ran down the lanes of the roadway and dribbled off the overpass, creating a huge mess.

that the problem was so urgent the Cops were scrambled to the scene?

7. I remember an amonia truck going over at that spot
In 1976 I worked at the TEC on the edge of downtown. You could smell amonia all the way down there.
