Much less generic than other Texas cities, and in fact most other American cities. It's the meeting point between Texan ranch culture and Latin America. Both of these are authentic, lively cultures, although one of them tends to be a bit on the conservative side. San Antonio itself has a number of liberal enclaves, although it is a pale shadow at best of Austin.
Traffic isn't that bad, so long as you don't live near Yuppie Central (roughly centered around 1604 and 281 north of town). However, it's got average traffic for a town of a million people, and public transportation is next to nonexistant.
Cost of living is cheap. My 2800sf house close to the medical center appraises at 143K.
Outdoor activities are fair. The coast is a bit more than 2 hours away, and there are a few decent-sized parks within an hour of the city. On the other hand, you're a weekend's drive from the swamp, the mountains, or the tropics, and the area north and west of town is full of steep canyons and other neat things.
Send me a message if you have any specific questions about schools, religious, cultural stuff, or other hobbies or things.
