No excuse for no district election

Gov. Rick Perry should call a special election to fill the unexpired representative term in the 22nd Congressional District.

There’s some urgency to this request. The deadline for calling a special election is today.

The district has been without a congressman since June, when former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay resigned in the middle of a scandal.

On Nov. 7, voters will decide which candidate will assume the seat when Congress convenes in January.

They may as well decide — at the same time — who will represent the district until then.

1. Let it go

Congress will only meet for maybe a couple more weeks after Labor Day before they recess for the year. And they damn sure aren't going to take up anything any more important than renaming the Post Office in Wazoo, MI. I think as Maloy pointed out today, this Congress will meet for the fewest days of any in our lifetime.

And he had been down here screwing things up. It wasn't until after they left that the full impact was felt. In actuality the Governor in Texas is a Constitutionally "Weak" Governor, having relatively little real power. So while I didn't want him, I still didn't realize the unmitigated train wreck this guy would be.

edit, I meant to add that Congress was in session for 97 days this session the least ever.

Perry sets Nov. 7 as election day for DeLay's seat

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry today officially set the special election to fill the unexpired term of U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay to coincide with the general election on Nov. 7.

Candidates wishing to run in the special election must file by 5 p.m. Sept. 1 with the Texas Secretary of State to appear on the ballot.

Shortly after DeLay announced in April that he was resigning from Congress, Perry said he would not schedule a special election to fill the vacancy before the general election. Today, he issued the official order setting the date.

The winner of the special election will serve DeLay's district in Congress from the day the election results are certified until a new Congress begins in January.

7. The upside could be

that several people file, including David Wallace, the mayor of Sugar Land. He and Ft.Bend county were shut out in the cold by the party, who went with SekulaGibbs, councilmember from Harris County. A special election with him on the ballot, would give Ft.Bend a chance to make a little noise and maybe to the point of voting for him and letting the write-in slide....skipping SekulaGibbs.

It could also lead to mass confusion if people vote for her name, where it does appear on the ballot, for the unexpired term and think they've done it all and not do the write-in portion. If anything, her name appearing on the ballot and also needing to be written in can only lead to her losing some votes, when people fail to grasp the idea. Might not be a lot, but I don't see anything for her to gain in this.

If Lampson files (which I assume he will), it also allows him to go back to his high-roller donors, who gave the max $2,100 and get another $2,100.

Personally, I'm just waiting for Juanita's take on the whole thing. Should be fun.
