Early voting begins today on AISD's $519.5 million bond proposals. Much of this package is needed; some of it is questionable; Proposition Five is a real stinker and deserves to be rejected by the voters. This bond combines two totally unrelated projects: a district-wide performing arts center and a new middle school in Southwest Austin at Slaughter Lane and FM 1826. Now, I have nothing against the arts, but a new middle school will drive more development on environmentally sensitive land, further degrade Barton Springs and the Aquifer, and contribute to more suburban sprawl at the expense of existing schools and neighborhoods.
This school was opposed by the citizens' bond advisory committee which put the bond package together. The demographic data used by the school district showed it is not needed. It was not even in the bond package at the time that public hearings were held. It was only put in the proposal after the process by the AISD board as a sop to the Circle C mob so they would not oppose the entire bond.
South Austin Democrats voted to oppose Prop 5 (as well as Prop One). The Austin Chronicle endorsed a No Vote on Five.
Please---just because the AISD board is a gutless bunch of scalawags unable to stand against more suburban sprawl in southwestern Travis County doesn't mean the voters can't show some spine.
