Orwell Rolls in His Grave

Wed. Sept. 29, 7:30 PM
The Angelika Mockingbird Station

Director Robert Kane Pappas will be present to conduct a Q&A after the
film.

With the 24-hour news stations, newspapers, radio and the internet,
Americans have more choices than ever to get their news. More outlets,
better coverage, right? Not according to Director Robert Kane Pappas in
his new film Orwell Rolls in His Grave, who believes that American
media does not present unbiased or even accurate coverage of today's
events. By tracing the distortion of the media and ignored stories,
Pappas poses the question: "Has America has entered an Orwellian world
of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth?" His film
talks about what the media doesn't talk about: itself.

Waco Friends of Peace will host the first in a series of free weekly films on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m., downstairs at the Waco Central Library, 1717 Austin Avenue at 17th Street, in downtown Waco.

After a light meal at 5:30 p.m., the group will show a free screening of “Orwell Rolls in His Grave,” a documentary on the corporate media, by Robert Kane Pappas. A discussion will follow with a panel of media professionals on the issue of media bias. “Plan to stay after the 102 minute movie and share in the discussion.”

“This important film offers critical insight into today’s news coverage for those who wish to stay informed,” said Kay Lucas of Friends of Peace.

Panel members include Carlos Sanchez, editor for The Waco Tribune-Herald, Dr. Brad Owens, journalism professor at Baylor University, and Nathan Diebenow, staff writer for The Lone Star Iconoclast.

2. Why would this cause Orwell to roll in his grave?
Stupid title. Orwell saw this stuff happening when he wrote 1984 and Animal Farm. There's no grave-rolling here, just a contented sleep knowing that he was right, and while we might be living in an Orwellian Nightmare, he's sleeping soundly.

4. Orwell hoped to stop this vision of the future from occuring.
he says he wrote 1984, "to alter other people's idea of the kind of society they should strive after."

But here it is. Thus he rolls.

7. His "vision of the future" already existed in 1948 when he wrote the book.
There's no future-telling in it, except that all the pieces come together in 1984. When Winston reads "The Book", you'll notice that much of the history had already occured explicitly by 1948. There's nothing in Animal farm that hadn't occured yet either.

Of course, he worked to try to stop it and roll it back, but it was all already there.

If you want a vision of the future of the human race, imagine a boot stomping on a human face forever.

9. So, who's gonna show it in Austin?
Looks worthwhile. DVD is $30. Sounds like a Meetup or house party to me! Would that the Alamo would show it, but they are of course already booked throughout October. Post-election showings are fine and dandy but it might have a little more of an effect beforehand.

11. Man, am I glad I saw this.
I wasn't going to go, but decided at the last minute to drag my butt down to the Angelika to see this documentary.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Orwell adds to the Outfoxed general thesis that the media has been compromised, and it's not just FOX. The doc takes a long hard look at the Congressional manuevers, lobbyists, think tanks and corporate greed which have led the Fourth Estate to its currently pathetic state.

Educational, bracing, inspiring, this is a tool for waking people up from their complacent slumber.

Or in cheesier terms, you can't fight the Matrix until you know it's there.
