Can 100 DU Texans send a quick email about Betty Browns racist comment?
It is easy. Take a minute to send an email to State Representative Betty Brown about her insensitive remarks to an Asian-American during the voter suppression bill hearing.

betty.brown@house.state.tx.us

I have. Think we can get 100 of DUers in Texas to do it? Demand that she apologize.

Here is the background:

I'm going to bet we dont get past 15.

5. She sort of apologized - at least to Ramey Ko
WWLP.com 4/9/09
Lawmaker apologizes for Voter ID remark

(snip)
"This is something that would make it a lot easier both for you and poll workers if there was some name you could adopt just for these identification purposes that would be easier for Americans to deal with," said Brown.

Ko was actually not surprised by the remarks.

"It just shows the stereotypes Asians face as a relatively small and new ethnic minority in the United States," said Ko.

Ko confirmed that Brown's office called him after the Texas Democratic Party cried foul. Brown said she had called Ko to apologize.

"We're ready to work with any of these people who are having problems and have them educate us on anything that might be going on that we're unaware of," said Brown.

I do not expect someone with the deep belief in racism that is practiced by you and your party to understand that those who have names which are difficult for you and your type to pronounce might actually be proud of their names and do not need/wish to change them to make your life easier.

I personally find your hubris and thoughtlessness toward the rights of others to be callused and unpatriotic.

Received an automatic response.

9. Done! Here's mine:
Thanks for reminding me again of why we only allow the Texas Legislature to meet every other year and only for 140 days at a time. We just can’t stand much more than that.

Good grief, Betty Brown.

11. The Red Coats are coming! The Red Coats are coming!
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 01:42 PM by sonias
It's real funny that the Rs have adopted that name for themselves too. The whole audience at the public photo ID hearing was pretty much solid red and they like to refer to themselves as Red Coats too.

They keep forgetting their history, whether it's tea bags, or the British Red Coats, or the Confederate South during the Civil war, and even who won the fight at the Alamo.

They can't win for losing.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

as soon as I picked up my jaw off the floor after reading what she said...here's my letter

Representative Brown,

I was recently informed of your unfortunate remarks made during the discussion of the voter ID issue in the state legislature. I, and many others, found them to be insensitive, uninformed, and quite possible racist. I hope that you can understand that all Americans, regardless of their ancestry, have a right to maintain the integrity of their personal history, which surely includes their name. I am sorry you feel that Asian Americans should turn their backs on their culture to make it easier for poll workers who apparently can't extend any effort on trying to pronounce foreign names. I also hope you find it in your heart to apologize for your poorly thought-out comments. They have offended a lot of people in our wonderful state, and again brought Texas to the national stage in a shameful light. And I sincerely hope that your constituents remember your remarks the next time they consider who they want to elect to speak for them.

Thank you for your time,

Nicole Lambeth, Tyler, TX
