Bo Obama (new 1st puppy) is a Texan
AAS 4/13/09
New Obama puppy Bo knows Texas

BOYD, Texas — The next resident of the White House has a Texas past.

The 6-month-old Portuguese water dog that the Obama girls are naming Bo was bred in Texas.

(snip)

AKC says Bo was bred by Art and Martha Stern, who run Amigo Portuguese Water Dogs in Boyd, about 35 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

:toast: to the cutest 1st dog "Amigo's New Hope" aka "Bo".

A new puppy know whose name is "New Hope". He's going to be very loved. :loveya:

2. He is according to the press statement
AKC press statement
"This breed possesses a lot of energy, so without training or a job to do, the dog may entertain itself by running full-speed down the West Wing or barking at Republicans," said Mary Burch, Ph.D, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and CGC Director. "That type of behavior may not make the best impression on visiting dignitaries, so we recommend that the Obama’s enroll Bo in an obedience class such as the new AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program."

He knows who to bark at.

6. I like this line
"the dog may entertain itself by running full-speed down the West Wing or barking at Republicans,"

We need lots more barking at Republicans.

4. Hello, Sonia and all: He's as cute as can be and...
I hope he's as smart as my 98 lb. black lab. Everyone is talking about how big he's going to be, but I thought they aren't any bigger than a lab, right???
:)

5. I think they are smaller but still a good size dog
AKC page on the PWD breed
Size, Proportion, Substance
Size--Height at the withers--Males, 20 to 23 inches. The ideal is 22 inches. Females, 17 to 21 inches. The ideal is 19 inches. Weight--For males, 42 to 60 pounds; for females, 35 to 50 pounds. Proportion--Off square; slightly longer than tall when measured from prosternum to rearmost point of the buttocks, and from withers to ground. Substance--Strong, substantial bone; well developed, neither refined nor coarse, and a solidly built, muscular body.

They can weigh 60 pounds.

8. He is a returned dog if you think about it
The first owner/adopter situation didn't work out so he's been family adopted before and returned. This is a second chance for this pup.

I think the first priority is the allergy situation for the girls. If this breed is the best to help make sure they can all live happily together then they did the right thing. Maybe these PWD breed of dogs aren't that common in pounds.

9. It sounds like they have the temperament of a lab.
My advice to the Obama family is to make sure that they keep him VERY BUSY. My lab was very, very rambunctious when allowed to get bored. He got into and chewed EVERYTHING, LOL! He's still relatively young, so I still have to keep him active. Definitely not the type of dog for a lazy parent. Extremely affectionate/patient. Absolutely LOVES WATER, and blows his fur every year (which is a pain). But,the pros definitely outweighs the cons. I hope The Obama's enjoy their PWD the same as I enjoy my lab :)

10. High energy/high maintenace
It's a good thing the Obama's are an active family and no doubt this dog will get a workout trying to keep up with 4 active people. Two of them kids who I'm sure have a lot of energy too.

Labs have wonderful temperaments and are very lovable dogs too. I'm glad you are enjoying your companion lab.
