UT Austin to unveil Barbara Jordan statue

AUSTIN, Texas — A statue of pioneering lawmaker Barbara Jordan will become the first of a woman on the Austin campus of the University of Texas when it is unveiled Friday.

Jordan was the first black woman in the Texas Legislature and went on to become the first black woman from a Southern state in the U.S. House of Representatives. She died in 1996 at age 59.

In 2003, students approved a $1 student fee to raise money for a statue of Jordan and one of farm worker leader Cesar Chavez.

:applause: for both of Barbara Jordan and Cesar Chavez. Way to go UT students!

2. It doesn't say where though.
I'd like to go see them, but the campus is huge. They could be anywhere...

I applaud the work and life of Cesar Chavez, but my heart will always belong to Barbara Jordan for the beauty of her eloquence and intellect.

I didn't get a chance to go to this unveiling ceremony yesterday.

The statesman has a nice video and great pictures of the Barbara Jordan statue.

Very nice art work. :toast:

Because of her, my parents became convinced that Nixon should be impeached.
