Blizzard White Xmas for West Texas
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6786561.html

DALLAS — In much of the rolling plains of West Texas, a blizzard has never been recorded.

There has been one now.

The region west and northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw blizzard-like conditions throughout the day Thursday as up to 8 inches of snow fell in the region, according to the National Weather Service. Winds gusting at up to 65 mph drifted the snow as deep as 5 feet in some areas.

No blizzard warning had ever been issued for an area of Texas as far south as Interstate 20, said Jim Wingenroth, senior forecaster at the National Weather Service office in San Angelo.

“There's a two-foot snow drift at my front door,” Smith said Thursday from his office 50 miles south of the closed interstate.

2. Hope everyone made it through ok
Compounding the traffic obstacles on the interstate are the multitude of jackknifed tractor-trailer rigs and stalled cars, said Trooper Sparky Dean of the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Abilene.

Snow is now melting here in Chicago.

Merry Christmas everyone!

4. Eating Xmas Tamales in your honor today, Sonia!
Hope you are having a lovely holiday! Stay warm and don't blow away up there in the windy city. I thought I might take off like the Flying Nun the first time I visited Chicago on Dec 26th about 22 years ago. :hi:

7. Missed out on them this year
:( But at least you got some mana!

It's snowing again - it's beautiful looking at it through a window, but it does put a crimp in your travel plans.

3. I drove THROUGH the blizzard
On rural roads around Eagle Mountain Lake, as an added bonus.

Almost had an SUV rear-end our sedan. I had to step out into the driving snow, trudge towards the out-of-control Jeep, and push it from behind until its rear wheels were able to gain traction. I saved their SUV and our family car from a nasty collision.

Two cars ahead of us were not so lucky. They managed to block the entire road the way they collided, so some of us formed convoy to drive over this rough dirt trail in order to bypass the wreck. Apparently we were the lucky ones - I think some folks who tried the dirt trail after us got stuck and had to head back the way they came and find lodging with their party hosts.

Dang, but that was an experience! ChickMagic and I are home safe and sound, though. Merry Christmas, everybody!
