My synopsis of the debate:
1. Rick Perry has corrupted yet another government entity- the Texas Teachers Retirement System.
2. Kathie Glass (L) thinks that Medicaid should be abolished, along with the public school system. Children should be allowed to drop out of school if it's okay with the child and the child's parents. She feels that public schools should be run by private agencies/companies/local communities and the money sent to school districts to be distributed to each school for each student. She's would repeal property taxes, she thinks Obama is the worst president ever, and she wants to repeal Obamacare. She thinks the lottery should be brought to Texas to help with our deficit. She's for the death penalty, but she thinks provisions and improvements should be made. Her drink of choice out of wine, green tea, and ____ (I can't remember the third option)is wine. She's a typical Libertarian whack job, imho.
3. Ms. Shafto(G) is vehemently against the death penalty, she wants to raise taxes to deal with our floundering educational system, and the budget deficit. Every child deserves medical care and an education. Her drink of choice is green tea. She's a very nice former teacher, but my guess is that she doesn't know much about the responsibilities of the governor's seat.
Note: Wasn't there a rumor circulating that the "green" candidate was bought and paid for by the Republican Tea Party?
4. To deal with the deficit, Bill White thinks we should go through and cut each unnecessary or cushie governmental jobs held by lobbyist crony friends of Perry and other needless governmental positions, but unlike Perry, White would assess the situation way in advance. White is definitely against a lottery (gambling?), and raising taxes to deal with the deficit. He's against the legalization of medical marijuana, but thinks patients should consult with their physicians for guidance. White noted that we have a high drop out rate, and he's for early childhood learning, along with more public funding for public education (he said it's our money, so we should use it instead of giving it to other states). He thinks every child that wants one, deserves an education. He would get rid of the Robinhood system for schools and enlist a way to divide the money between schools that need it the most (not quite sure what he said regarding this). For uninsured children, he would keep the CHIP program, but he would set up more clinics for preventative care, which will eliminate the high costs associated with visiting emergency rooms. The costs associated in using emergency rooms are passed on to property owners in the way of taxes, and causes insurance rates to rise. White is for the death penalty because of victims rights. But, he would make sure to go over any and all evidence and dna testing before he made the decision when it comes down to an acquittal??? His drink of preference is coffee, but coffee wasn't one of the choices, so he chose green tea :) White chose not to discuss President Obama.
I'm sure there was more, but I can't remember right now. Please feel free to correct any areas that I misinterpreted, and/or add/clarify anything else that I may have missed. I'm sure the debate will be up on youtube in a few days, for those who missed it.
