First Reading: Perry again panned in debate reviews

The reviews are rolling in for last night’s Republican presidential debate, and once again, it was not a good night for Gov. Rick Perry.

Not a terrible night. Perry didn’t do his opponents any obvious favors, such as when he suggested in the Sept. 22 debate that opposition to the in-state tuition plan was heartless. The problem for Perry last night was that he was often left out of the discussion, and when he was brought into the discussion, he failed to land solid blows.

(snip)
It’s as if Perry has decided that debates are never going to go well, so he’s just going to try to survive them with as little damage inflicted as possible. Perry told a group of Dartmouth students after the debate that debates “are not my strong suit.”

Actually thinking is not Perry's strong suit either!

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Perry Fades Into Background in Debate

HANOVER, N.H. — If Rick Perry’s supporters were hoping for a dynamic, energized Texas governor to fully engage with the moderators, his rivals and the audience, they were disappointed Tuesday night.

Mr. Perry hardly seized the moment at the Washington Post/Bloomberg News debate to re-energize his flagging campaign. With the exception of one tough question for Mitt Romney on health care, he did not criticize his rivals. Nor did he make a grand case for his presidential ambitions.

Instead, he stuck to a few talking points, repeatedly mentioning energy independence as a sort of catchall answer to whatever was asked.

“You need a president with a plan, which I’m laying out over the next three days, and, clearly, the intent to open up this treasure trove that America’s sitting on and getting America independent on the domestic energy side,” Mr. Perry said in answer to a question about how he would produce results in Washington.

After three debates in which Mr. Perry had been a central figure, the Texas governor seemed to fade into the background this time. The moderators asked him fewer questions, and he went long stretches without interjecting a thought or trying to steal the spotlight back. His rivals appeared to no longer view Mr. Perry as the looming political threat they once did.

te he he he he. I just can't keep from laughing....

Perry: Money is not enough to save him

When word came that Texas Gov. Rick Perry had raised $17 million, pundits insisted that he had gotten new life. I didn’t buy it, and last night showed exactly why.

A Republican consultant e-mailed me this morning after Perry’s horrid debate performance: “I don’t know what he’ll do now — he can’t get up off the mat, and America doesn’t like that. If he’d had a bad couple weeks but came out shining last night, he’d have won their support. But to not be able to come back at all makes people just look the other way.”

Others are speculating whether Perry is effectively finished as a presidential contender. Byron York writes: “After two consecutive weak debate performances, Perry was under considerable pressure to do well on Tuesday. He didn’t. In fact, Perry was so underwhelming that the candidate himself began explaining away his performance just moments after the debate ended. ‘Debates are not my strong suit,’ he told a friendly crowd at a Dartmouth fraternity house not far from the debate hall.”

I have no earthly idea why Perry thought it a good idea to hang out at a Darmouth frat house after the debate. More important, how the heck is he supposed to go face-to-face with President Obama in the general election debates? Thankfully for the GOP, that possibility is increasingly remote.

I guess Perry is toast now. Finished. Washed up. End of the road. Coming home with his tail between his legs. Too bad on that last one - wish he would be so depressed he'd leave the country for good.
