"SALT LAKE CITY - Lightning struck a shelter at a Boy Scout camp high in the mountains, killing one youth and injuring three others, authorities said Wednesday.

The lightning bolt struck the Camp Steiner shelter, a log structure open on one side, Tuesday night, said sheriff's Deputy Wally Hendricks.

...

Last Thursday, an assistant Scoutmaster and a 13-year-old Scout were killed by lightning in California's Sequoia National Park. And four Scout leaders at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia were electrocuted July 25 in front of several Scouts after a metal tent pole touched a power line."

1. Have there just been an insane number of Boy Scout deaths / accidents
lately?

Or am I imagining things?

after the 4 leaders got electrocuted.
I actually was a Scout, but quit when I was 7 or 9 because I didn't like to change into the uniform...

16. Did the bear attack make the news?
I know it made our local news but didn't know if it was a nat'l story:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/collin/plano/stories/072605dnmetbear.dd073d3.html

On Friday, the 15-year-old was three miles from the end of a rugged 50-mile hike in southern Alaska when he crossed paths with an adult brown bear.

Alex led the way as the four neared the end of Resurrection Pass Trail to Cooper Landing – a trek that went from 500 feet to more than 4,000 feet and back down. The bear was hidden in grass 20 feet away. When Alex turned into the path, it charged.

Mike McFatter, the adult trailing the group, fired gunshots into the air, and the bear ran. Using shirts as tourniquets, Scouts stopped the bleeding from the teenager's right arm and leg.

Three hours later, after trips on a four-wheeler ambulance and helicopter, Alex was at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage for minor surgery.

6. Is scouting always this risky?
Or are the mishaps just getting reported for a change?

10. ANOTHER one? Damn, gawd hates boyscouts
At this rate, they're catching up with The Marines.

That's what... six in one week?

Not to mention the heat stroke illnesses.

Seriously though, it is tragic.

But if it were The ACLU or Gay Camping Association, you know Dobson, Robertson and Phelps would be dancing in the streets proclaiming the glory of gawd's will.

14. Question: Has lightning killed Boy Scouts yearly
and I've just not noticed it?

Is this a case of increased lightning deaths involving Boy Scouts or increased reporting of those deaths?
