Chesapeake sheriff's sergeant accused of robbing bank
CHESAPEAKE

Police say a Chesapeake sheriff's sergeant - wearing dark glasses, gloves and a surgical mask - robbed a BB&T branch Tuesday afternoon.

Charges were pending late Tuesday against John Michael Keane II, 32, of the 1100 block of Fern Lane in Suffolk, according to a news release from city police.

About 2 p.m., a man entered the BB&T on Volvo Parkway and handed a bookbag to a teller "implying that he was conducting a bank robbery," according to the news release. The teller filled the bag with money and handed it back to the man, who left in a red car.

A short time later, a Chesapeake K-9 officer parked in a nearby lot saw a car that matched the description of the robber's vehicle. That officer alerted another officer, who stopped the car, a Mercury Sable driven by Keane.

Chesapeake police said they found evidence in the vehicle from the bank robbery.

Sgt. David Rosado, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Keane has worked there since 1998, when he began as a security officer. He became a deputy sheriff a year later and was promoted to sergeant in July 2008.
