Has anyone in the State of Virginia heard anything about reports . . .
of strange-appearing planes that look like missiles?

My father just called me, and we live in Southwest Virginia, basically, in and out of the mountains.

He was on I-77N when he caught an object out of the corner of the right side of his car. He was it was about 2000 feet up from the right side of his car and it was fast. He said he caught only a glimpse of it. I asked him if it was a solid white plane (like the unmanned planes) and he said it was a dull grey color.

He described that it was shaped like those long-range missiles that one of our war ships (long range ballistic missiles) shoot except it was probably bigger. He said it had really small wings on the front, and it appeared to have some glass in the front like a window. He said he had never seen anything like this before but that is the only way he could describe it.

He also stated that as it moved, it was hugging the mountains as it went over them, like it was trying to avoid radar, barely high enough to get over the top of the mountains. He said there was no flames, smoke, and no noise, but he said he knew we didn't have anything that moved that fast, looked like that, and he said that the color grey that it was is what stood out about it. If he had not been driving, he said he probably would have gotten a better look.

He told me for some reason this object was continuing to bother him because it was nothing he had seen before or similar to anything except a rocket. Also, the strange color was worrying him for some reason. It's been sunny all day today, and I asked him if it was real shiny and he stated that no, it was a real dull dark gray. A color that he had not seen on anything before.

I told him that with everything that is going on in the world today, he should go ahead and call the state police and report it. He was hesitant because he figured since he is older, they would think he was senile and think he was trying to say it was a UFO kind of phenomenon. I told him to tell them the same thing I said, that with what is going on in the World today, he felt he should report it to them because it was bothering him so much; especially the color of the object. I told him to, also, ask them if they had any other reports about strange objects.

After a while, I had finally convinced him to call. He called and he said the dispatcher stated that she would report it to all of the county deputies as well as to the state police. He said she stated that she would give them the description he had given her, and that they would keep an eye out and, also, find out if anyone else has reported such an object. She told him that he was the first one to report this. He told her that he felt like he should report it because of the things going on in the World today, and he said she took him serious without hesitation, and took down every word, verbatim, when he was describing it to her. He said he was surprised about how serious she was taking his report. He figured they would take his report but not ask him any questions or be so serious about it.

Anyway, he is stuck on the color of this thing. I asked him if it had any markings and he said it didn't, just that strange color dull gray.

Since the state police are taking this serious, I thought I might say something here just in case someone else has heard about such reports. I would really like to know so I could tell my dad. It's not that he thinks he imagined it because he swore he got a pretty good look at it; however, it was really moving.

I'm going to copy and paste this same post in our surrounding states to see if anyone in the close proximity to VA border have seen or heard of reports of such a thing.

Well, thanks for reading this, that is if you have made it this far.

1. Sounds like an experimental aircraft
that is what it sounds like.

No noise, RamJets don't do it, or should not do it

2. If it's SW Virginia, it's not that unusual to see jets and such
There's an Army Ammunition plant close to where I live and I see weird stuff all the time... planes flying really low at odd times, etc.

6. Yeah, back before the Stealth Bomber came out publically . . .
they were obviously testing it around here because there were so many reports of UFO sightings, we made it on Unsolved Mysteries.

Plus a local radio announcer wrote a book about it as he really got involved in finding out what people were seeing. As he spoke out publically more, the more threats he got. His family was threatened as well. It was really wierd what he went through if it was nothing.

After the sitings stopped, it wasn't long before they came out with the stealth. So most of us just figured that is what we saw????

3. my wife used to see planes tested in remote areas of Virginia
She used to live in an isolated mountainous rural area of western Virginia, and saw the stealth fighter being tested before it was announced to the public.

Gray actually makes a plane harder to see than black, so making a plane gray makes sense.

4. Hugging mountains in flight is what cruise missiles do....

I find it hard to believe that we're testing cruise missiles in rural virginia, tho.

5. Seriously, is this what they do? We have one of the largest . . .
military arsenals in the United States. Every couple of years, someone mishandles some of the dynamite or whatever they pack the warheads with and a part of it will blow up. They rebuild it (whatever section they need to) and get the people back to work.

Are you in the military?

Well, I watched the local news, and there were no other reports. Not saying my dad didn't see it though. He seemed awfully concerned about what he saw.

Let's say it was a cruise missile . . . couldn't they be testing it without a warhead on it?

I don't know. I just found this unusual.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my post.

8. Yeah, as far as I know. I don't think they have closed it down.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my post. I have forwarded some of what you all said to my dad and also some pictures of ballistic missles and he said that is what it looked like.

NOW, all we have to do is find out why they are testing them out in very rural southwest virginia.

OR, it probably is better to just not say anything else. Not with this Government.

Thanks again everyone from Virginia.

9. Yeah it's run by Alliant Techsystems now.
Here's a press release from last year http://www.house.gov/boucher/docs/RAAPstate03.htm

The company I work for makes a part for them. We get 2 or so orders a year from them for a plastic seal that goes into cruise missles, so I'm told anyway.

Hi all, I'm new. :hi:

Where in SoWeVa was this? My parents are in Carroll County, I can ask them if they've seen or heard anything about it. (I live in Chicago now, but I grew up there - hope I'm welcome here. I still try to follow the local politics, send Boucher's campaign a little $, you know the drill.)

Hasn't there always been a lot of testing of various things going on out there? There's a government facility of some sort just outside Roanoke that has no signs and doesn't allow anybody near it, for example.

11. Saw something like that too....
When heading down I-81 towards Bristow. My husband noticed it first and thought it was some type of experimental military missle. Very scary looking tho.
