14 to 9 was the score. I grew up in Oak Harbor so we spent a lot of time in Skagit County because it was the nearest major retail area. Skagit County's traditionally a Republican stronghold.

I caution against using campaign signs as a polling device however. They are good at identifying who's a dedicated supporter. But for example Patty Murray has an overwhelming lead in the polls over George Nethercutt but all you see are Nethercutt signs. In 1996 you saw more Dole/Kemp signs yet Bill Clinton carried the state.Never the less seeing a majority of Kerry/Edwards signs in a traditional Republican stronghold is a good thing. I have no doubt Kerry will carry Washington State.

2. In Denver Today
I had to drive from a western suburb to Denver International Airport this morning (on Interstate-70). I counted approx. 15 Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers ... ONE B*/C___.

It's got to mean something.

3. I don't want to appear too optimistic too early, but.
this is Bush country and I've only seen about a half dozen Bush/Cheney lawn signs and far more Kerry than Bush/Cheney bumper stickers. What can it mean?

than * signs or stickers and we have a lot of military families here.

However, there are some very big * signs along certain roads, obviously placed there by the local campaign office and absolutely no big Kerry signs.

Part of the fun when I drive around is to see the new way in which these big * signs have been defaced or destroyed. I've seen "LIARS" written across several in drippy, red paint, several have been covered in a layer of yellow paint, one was ripped down and one was even burned.

5. On Bainbridge
When the first Bush ones went up, I said to my vanpool buddies, "Ok, lets all bet on how long it is before those Bush signs are defaced." I predicted a week, I think it was about 8 days. They stayed up like that for awhile. Yesterday I noticed they had new ones (can't remember if they replaced the one by the ferry), I bet the new ones get defaced even quicker this time.

6. One of the signs I saw with "LIARS" written in red paint was on Bainbridge
near the little berry stand at the end of August. Of course it was next to the huge Nethercutt sign, which also ended up in pieces on the ground!

7. Yo_Mama, thanks for noticing!
I've been busting my tail to get these out, having volunteered for Kerry a whole year ago---Last October I got to spend a couple of hours with Vanessa Kerry up at WWU. As we met I shook her hand and told her she was the daughter of the next President of the United States. She spoke eloquently to two different groups, while I hurled softball questions from the peanut gallery. As we left one venue, we passed a couple of students volunteering for Kucinich, and they were presumably trying to poach some supporters. Vanessa stopped and told them what a good man Dennis was. They asked her to volunteer--I don't guess they knew who she was.....Ahh, times were simpler then.

Anyway, I've been purchasing all kinds of Kerry gear for our valley, and I am now bragging about it. So far, I've distributed:

6325 Buttons
4575 Bumper stickers
4000 Lapel stickers
693 Signs, banners, and placards
130 Dog Tags, bandanas, balloons, etc.

Included in the signs total are 100 4'x8' signs, distributed to San Juan, Snohomish, Whatcom, and Skagit Counties. I hope these are some of what you've seen--actually I'm certain they are.

If you get a chance, stop in at our Mount Vernon office some Saturday. I'm the guy who mans it on those days, and I'd love to meet you (or any other DUer ou there!). Its right on the main drag, across from the food co-op.

We'll also host another debate party on Tuesday evening (the VPs go at it), and I'll be there for that. We had more than sixty veiwers gathered last night, and if half that many show for Tuesday, it'll be great fun and great company.
